Much of this information has been researched by Richard Blainey [1736]; The Scott Family Tree; Ancestry.com; Familysearch.org [1738], Raphael Dammer [1737], Berlin Huguenot Family Trees [1739], Compgen [1740], "The Huguenot Refuge"[1741] and "French Huguenots in Berlin" [1742].

King Louis XIV
of France

With the Edict of Fontainebleau, prohibiting the practice of Protestantism in France (issued by French King Louis XIV in 1685), Huguenots were forced to either convert to Catholicism or face exile. After the Edict of Potsdam, by Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg (Elector of Brandenburg and Duke of Prussia), many French Protestants (réformés) sought refuge in Prussia where they were welcomed after the population had been decimated in the Thirty Years' War. A French "colony" [Französischen Kolonie] was established in the area that later became Französisch Buchholz.

This Edict of Potsdam, written in German and French, was passed clandestinely into France. This publicity was continued by Friedrich's son, Prince Elector Frederick III, who came to power in 1688, and who in 1701 became Frederick I, King of Prussia.

Friedrich Wilhelm
of Brandenburg

By 1700, approximately 30% of Berlin's residents were French, largely as a result of refugee immigration.

The origianal réfugiés were French Protestants, sometimes labelled Huguenots (a certainly pejorative term at the time).

Their descendants preferred the terms réformés or descendants réfugiés.

Edict of Potsdam

Preamble

"29 October 1685

Inasmuch as the persecutions and rigorous proceedings recently had, in France, against all of the reformed religion, have compelled many families to leave that kingdom and establish themselves abroad, we have determined, as being touched by the just compassion, which we are bound to feel for all who suffer for the Gospel's sake, and for the purity of that faith, which we hold in common with them, to offer to the aforesaid French, by this present edict, signed with our own hand, a sure and free asylum in all the lands and provinces of our dominion; and to declare to them at once what rights, franchises, and privileges we intend that they should enjoy, to console them, and repair in some degree the calamities with which divine Providence has seen it good to strike so considerable a portion of his church."
