November 1998: Trampers were: (left to right in the time delay photo T8) Ross Dunlop (seated), John Barrell, Cathy Thompson, Jim Callaghan (seated), Alan Rogers, Ian Bardsley, (crouching), Margaret Taylor (Neil's sister) and me, Keith Blayney. It was raining most of the time and misty when it wasn't, so there were no good views. We got wet and cold. |

| Day one was a 2½ hour tramp from Holdsworth Lodge to Mountain House then a further 1½ hour climb through dense bush to Powell Hut (40 bunks) on the open tops. This hut has since burnt down and been replaced. The next day was a 3 hour treck along the open ridge to Mt Holdsworth (1430m), Jumbo Peak then Jumbo Hut (30 bunks). The last day was a 1 hour descent to Atiwhakatu Hut (8 bunks) then a 3 hour walk out back to Holdsworth Lodge.
We then had a visit to the Mt Bruce Wildlife centre. |
