At Halfway Hut we met trampers from Poland, Luxembourg, Germany and Switzerland who had struggled up from Hauroko Burn Hut, some not arriving until after dark. They were in for a tough time the next day!

Day 7: (Friday 12/03/04) -- Halfway Hut to Hauroko Burn Hut 5 hours
We followed the river flat until the climb before the confluence with the Gardner Burn. Some really nasty muddy sections here, particularly the log I slipped on and took a chunk out of my shin that took forever to heal.

We cross the Hauroko Burn on a walkwire, turning left (south-east) on the true right, heading up the far bank to mossy areas.

The track becomes easier the closer to the lake, but at times one cannot escape the mud. Jim waded across the last side stream river when he could have used the substantial Walkwire (?to clean his boots). The last stretch is flat and quite easy, with attractive views of the burn. Pitty the ferns often cover the track.
