A British Columbia indigenous Blaney family
of the Tla'amin (Sliammon), Homathko (Homalco), K'omoks or Klahoose First Nations

While I am not of the Tla'amin or kin people, I have tried to respect the The Protocol for Being a Respectful Guest outlined by Elsie Paul.

Five introductory comments:

  • Where did this very European name "Blaney" come from? I have yet to discover the presumed Irish (or Welsh) Blaney settler who married or partnered an indigenous woman and so donated his surname and genes to this family.

  • After attempting two speculative Family Trees based on information and photogtraphs from various public web sites, including Facebook, I decided that the complex, incomplete and often conflicting public information I had could make the system I usually use seem disrespectful or even harmful so I changed to a generation list system.

  • Living Blayneys are included if they have already provided a public appearance, such as posting photos and relationships on Facebook. If any living person is unhappy with this, please get in touch so I can remove anything you find inappropriate.

  • Public domain photographs, including those posted on Facebook will have some photo editing to remove scratches, stains, fingerprints, shadows etc but every attempt is made to retain their historical integrity.

  • More accurate information will undoubtedly be obtained from the Tla'amin family tree project when and if it is made public.

I was confused about relationships reported by various sites and Facebook individuals and wondered if "brother", "sister", "cousin" "son", "daughter" etc may not always be a literal or even a biological relationship. This was partly confirmed by finding Fay Blayney's public statement to the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls given on 4th April 2018 [1657] revealing the impact of separation at Residential School, death, abuse, alcohol, adoption etc on her family and thus making any normal family relationships very difficult to document or reflect the reality of those disruptions and trauma.
The transcript of that statement is available on-line HERE
In 1971 Church House (Bute Inlet), the home village of many Blaneys was relocated to Sliammon territory by the Canadian Government with the loss of much language, culture and family history.
Added to the above issues is the positive culture of relatives taking in children "without a mother", the system of "Aunties" ensuring there are no orphans or children deprived of a supporting parent figure [1676]. This again made western nuclear family concepts and traditional family trees less relevant.
As I have no wish to re-traumatise any individual nor disrespect or caste blame on anyone (alive or not) who may have reformed, recovered and/or been forgiven for past actions or inactions, the relationships will be kept vague and not intended to always be literal. To allow this I will present names as generations as opposed to strict Family Trees. Please feel free to contact me to correct or remove anything that is wrong or inappropriate. I do note, however, that Fay has stated on-line that "My Elders always said it's important to know where you come from" and shared much of the information given here.
