After completing the clockwise circuit of the lake we had one day rest and then did a counter-clockwise circuit of the north-western part of the Whirinaki Forest starting and finishing at the River Road Car Park.

I found the last section of the Whirinaki tramp very tiring and couldn't understand that given the relatively flat nature and what I considered reasonable fitness. However by the time I got back to Hawera I had a fever and spent the next few days in hospital with what turned out to be a sub-hepatic abscess. The most likely cause of this was the pipi shellfish gathered from Raglan Harbour!
